𝑼𝑯𝑴 interview with licensed oncology-trained esthetician and milady master educator, Sherry Nicholson, LE!

Welcome, Sherry! We are so delighted to chat with you! What led you down the path of wanting to become a licensed oncology esthetician?

Thank you so much! I’m truly honored to be doing this interview.

The moment I walked into Esthetics School, I knew I had found my purpose. It wasn’t just about learning how to perform facials or recommend products. I felt this overwhelming desire to learn everything I possibly could so that one day I could turn around and teach it to someone else. Education has always been my calling.

My journey into Oncology Esthetics became deeply personal after losing my grandmother to lung cancer in 2007. Watching someone you love go through treatment changes you. I remember seeing the effects cancer and its treatments had on her skin, and at the time I didn’t realize there were professionals trained specifically to care for patients experiencing those challenges.

Years later, when I discovered Oncology Esthetics, everything clicked. I knew this was exactly where I was supposed to be.

Helping someone feel comfortable in their own skin during one of the hardest seasons of their life is about so much more than beauty. It’s about restoring confidence, dignity, comfort, and hope. Being trusted with that responsibility is something I never take for granted. Every certification I’ve earned, every book I’ve read, and every class I’ve taught has never been about adding letters behind my name. It’s been about becoming better equipped to serve the person sitting in my treatment room.

Today I combine my love for corrective skincare with my passion for educating clients and fellow professionals because everyone deserves safe, knowledgeable skincare, especially those navigating health challenges.

Tell us more about The Nu’Skyn Experience Spa. How do you specifically help your clients, and what services do you provide?

The Nu’Skyn Experience Spa was created with one mission: to educate first and treat second.

We don’t believe skincare should be based on trends. We believe it should be based on science, education, and understanding the person sitting in front of us. Every treatment begins with listening. We want to understand your lifestyle, your health history, your skincare habits, your goals, and what your skin is trying to communicate.

We specialize in corrective skincare for all skin tones, with a special passion for melanated skin. We help clients experiencing acne, hyperpigmentation, dehydration, barrier damage, premature aging, sensitive skin, and those undergoing or recovering from cancer treatments.

We provide customized facials, chemical peels, microneedling, advanced modalities, lymphatic treatments, and oncology-safe skincare services. What truly sets us apart isn’t the equipment. It’s the education.

Our clients leave understanding why we’re choosing certain ingredients, why we’re avoiding others, and how to care for their skin long after they leave our treatment room.

Healthy skin isn’t created in one appointment. It’s created through knowledge, consistency, and trust.

Tell us about your Advanced Esthetics Training Workshop. What can attendees expect?

This workshop honestly makes me smile every time I think about it.

I’ve spent years investing in myself. I’ve earned certifications, studied countless textbooks, attended advanced trainings, and even volunteered to teach at the very esthetics school where I graduated because I simply love education.

This workshop is everything I’ve learned poured into one experience.

We’ll cover oncology-safe practices, infection control, ingredient education, skin analysis, treatment planning, advanced modalities, and one of my favorite subjects…melanated skin.

For so many years, Black skin was overlooked in skincare education. Today we finally have more research, better ingredients, and safer treatment protocols designed specifically for our beautiful skin.

Melanin is beautiful, but it also requires knowledge.

My oldest daughter Taylor has some of the most beautiful skin I’ve ever seen, not because she was born with perfect skin, but because she’s learned to care for it. Watching her prioritize her skin reminds me why education matters. Beautiful skin isn’t luck. It’s knowledge, consistency, and healthy habits. That’s what I want every client and every student to leave with.

I want attendees to understand how to brighten safely, strengthen the skin barrier, reduce inflammation, treat hyperpigmentation responsibly, and avoid procedures that can cause unnecessary damage.

We’ll also focus on helping cosmetologists and barbers expand into skincare services so they can increase their income while providing better care for their clients.

I believe education changes careers, and careers can change families. If I can help someone build a business they love while improving lives through skincare, then I’ve done exactly what I was called to do.

Entrepreneurship comes with rewarding moments and unexpected challenges. Looking back, what has helped you overcome obstacles?

Entrepreneurship has taught me resilience. There were moments when doors closed that I thought would stay open forever.

One experience that really shaped me was volunteering to teach at my alma mater. I wasn’t there for recognition or a paycheck. I genuinely wanted students to succeed. Eventually I was asked not to continue teaching because some instructors felt intimidated by the lessons I was bringing into the classroom. I’ll be honest, it hurt. But instead of becoming discouraged, I reminded myself that purpose doesn’t disappear because one door closes.

Sometimes God simply redirects you.

That experience pushed me to create my own educational opportunities, develop workshops, mentor students independently, and build programs that allow me to reach even more people than I could have inside one classroom.

I’ve learned that when your mission is bigger than your disappointment, you’ll always find another way to serve.

When it comes to self-care, what are some of your favorite ways to recharge?

People laugh when I say this, but I absolutely love to vacation. Travel gives me space to breathe, reflect, and reset. It reminds me that life isn’t only about working. But self-care for me has also become much simpler.

Sometimes it’s sitting quietly with my thoughts. Plus, people do not believe me when I say I get 8 hours of sleep! I really do; I rest properly to reset lol. Sometimes it’s spending time with my family. Sometimes it’s reading another skincare textbook because, believe it or not, I actually enjoy learning.

Creating intentional moments to pause helps me pour back into myself so I can continue pouring into everyone else.

You can’t serve from an empty cup.
