Welcome, Enya, and how are you doing?

Doing great! Thanks for inviting me:)

What led you on a path of acting?

Actually, I never intended to become an actor. I had taken a few classes in college to help with my public speaking skills, but my plan was always to go into television news. But after a few months of trying it out at a local east coast station, I realized it wasn’t for me. So after a big breakup, I moved to Los Angeles and was lucky enough to get a production job at Warner Brothers, working on several popular television sitcoms at the time. It was during that time that I got to know several of the casting directors on the lot who eventually started reaching out to me to audition for small parts. Acting seemed to come pretty naturally to me, possibly because I’d been performing in front of people since I was six, taking dance, piano and harp lessons.

I LOVE ā€œAll the Queens Menā€! It’s one of my favorite shows! Love your character ā€œDA Alicia Rodds,ā€ even though she’s trying to take my girl Madam down LOL. Seeing a woman in a position of power is empowering, and you are portraying this role so beautifully! How did this role come about for you?

Thank you so much for the compliment! I totally agree…it’s empowering to see women in positions of power, and I feel so fortunate to portray DA Rodds. It’s been a thrilling experience! The audition process for this role was pretty standard for most roles these days. I self-taped from my home studio and from there, things moved quickly. I think I got a call from my agent about a week later saying that the show wanted to book me and of course, I was thrilled to hear I’d get to work at Tyler Perry Studios…BY FAR, it’s the most beautiful lot I’ve ever seen! Any actor on any level will tell you that it’s always a blessing to get to work, especially when there’s a talented team attached. Playing such a strong, complex character has been amazing, and I’m definitely grateful for the opportunity.

I was not surprised to learn that you also worked as a sports reporter and an entertainment reporter and obtained your B.A. in Radio & Television Communications with a minor in journalism, among many other brilliant things. Your greatness exudes from the screen. We love a multitalented educated queen!! Yesss! It’s the long and magnificent resume for us! What was your process like bringing ā€œDA Roddsā€ to life, and did you merge your knowledge and experience from your work as a reporter with this role?

Wow, thanks again! I really appreciate you saying that. Playing DA Rodds gave me a lot of layers to explore. My background in sports and entertainment reporting actually proved to be quite valuable in preparing for the role. All those years of having to think quickly, speak with confidence, and command a room translated perfectly to playing someone with DA Rodds’ kind of authority and presence.

But what I really loved was figuring out what drives her…that fierce sense of justice and her need to win. I guess I kind of tried to tap into that reporter/investigative mindset of digging deeper, questioning everything and looking beneath the surface to help ground the character and make her feel authentic. It has been a real highlight in my career.

What has this particular role taught you about yourself as a person and as an actor?

Personally, I’d have to say that playing DA Rodds has reminded me just how much I value resilience and standing by your convictions. She’s someone who knows what she believes in and won’t back down, even when things get tough. Seeing how the character navigates those challenges has reinforced my commitment to staying true to what matters to me, no matter what obstacles come up.

As an actor, playing her is a good reminder of the importance of finding layered moments. DA Rodds isn’t just one thing. She’s vulnerable beneath that strength, and exploring both sides confirms one of the things that I love most about the craft. The best characters are the ones where you keep peeling back layers. Sometimes it’s the small subtle choices that resonate the most.

Personally, I have so many favorite scenes in ā€œAll the Queens Menā€!! What was your favorite scene to film and why?

Well, my favorite scene actually hasn’t aired yet, so I can’t really go into detail about it. But I will say the court scenes that are currently airing were just incredible to shoot. The set looked so real… and in what other show have you seen an attorney roll in a life-sized guillotine in for a demo?!?!

I’ve had the opportunity to interview some of your fellow actors who have also worked with Tyler Perry on different projects, and they mentioned how fast filming goes. I have to ask. What is the filming time frame like for ā€œAll the Queens Menā€?

Yeah, it’s pretty crazy…for most shows I’ve worked on, you typically shoot one episode per week. At TPS, we shoot all 16 episodes of a season in about 3 weeks, averaging 12-14 hour days. So, while it can be a bit challenging as an actor to get all of the lines for all of the episodes memorized all at once, I do really admire how efficiently everything is done, especially with my background in production. It keeps you on your toes, but learning to shoot like this has been such a rewarding experience.

Out of all the characters you have portrayed thus far in your career, which one was the most challenging and memorable one for you, and why?

I’d say it’s DA Rodds. Up until this point, a lot of the characters I’ve had the chance to play longer term were sort of ā€œaccessoriesā€ to other characters (girlfriends, love interests, friends, etc.). And the more interesting characters were often guest star roles that only lasted for 1-3 episodes. So, getting to really explore and develop a strong and complex character like DA Rodds over the past two seasons has been an actor’s dream!

In addition to your acting, as an acting coach, what do you offer, and how beneficial is it to have this kind of support for anyone who is looking to go into the world of acting?

As a coach, I focus on both the technical and mental aspects of acting. I help students refine their craft, build confidence, and stay true to their own style through scene work, character development and work on emotional range. I also give my students tips for handling the pressures of the industry and try to teach them as much as I can about ā€œthe businessā€ of the business. I think that having a coach is crucial for anyone starting out. The acting world can be tough, and with the right support, actors can build their skills, stay motivated and navigate auditions with more confidence.

When you’re not busy, how are you practicing self-care?

Haha..I’ll admit, I’m not always as diligent with self-care as I should be, especially since I’m a caregiver for my aging mother. But I do make time for things I enjoy, like massages and facials. I start my mornings walking my dog, meditating, practicing gratitude, and praying, which is crucial for me. Sleep is still a work in progress, but I do my best to get as much rest as I can. I also love cooking, so I eat well, and almost never have fast food. To stay toned and feel healthier, I do light weight lifting and pilates. And traveling is a guilty pleasure that really feeds my soul. It’s a mix of small habits that help me stay grounded and energized.

Thank you so much, Enya!
