I would like to introduce you all to Michelle Rose! She is the founder and CEO of Busy Mom Playdates®, based in Washington, D.C. Though for her, this is more than a business; it’s a movement. She is trying to reach as many moms as she can and help them prioritize their self-care and rekindle their joy, which is very imperative for our well-being. As mothers, we go through so much, and sometimes we neglect ourselves. That’s where Michelle comes in! Recently, I received the opportunity to interview her! Let’s learn more! Check it out below!
Where are you from?
I am from the Boogie Down Bronx!
I’m a proud New Yorker who’s now a transplant living in the DMV area.
Tell us about your business, Busy Mom Playdates®, what you do, and what inspired you to start this business.
We create transformative travel and lifestyle experiences specifically for Gen X Moms of Color, blending local wellness events with luxurious global retreats.
During the pandemic, like many others, I experienced my first anxiety attack and was subsequently diagnosed with clinical depression. For someone like me, who has always been extroverted and a supporter of all people, this was unusual and incredibly challenging. I felt like I was at my lowest and struggled to communicate that to others.
In speaking with my small village, I realized that many were feeling the same, especially Gen X women who had dedicated their lives to their families and careers. The pandemic made many of us stop and ask, “What actually brings me joy?” The realization that many didn’t know the answer was astounding.
For me, travel has always been a source of joy. Through conversations with friends and family, I discovered that many were also struggling with clinical depression and had lost touch with what made them happy. They had become so caught up in living for others that they forgot how to live for themselves. This epiphany led to the birth of Busy Mom Playdates®. I believe that sometimes God brings you to a challenging moment so that your testimony can help others. My breaking moment became my testimony. I wanted to help other women find their way out of despair and rediscover joy.
Busy Mom Playdates® is about reminding moms that joy doesn’t have to wait until the kids are in college or the bank account is full. It’s about finding those immediate sources of happiness and embracing them fully.
What has the entrepreneurial journey been like for you thus far?
It has definitely been a challenging yet rewarding journey. As a first-time entrepreneur from a non-entrepreneurial family, there was a steep learning curve.
I’ve had to wear many hats, balance being a mom and wife, and navigate the complexities of running a business. However, connecting with like-minded individuals and recently joining a mastermind group has been incredibly beneficial. Despite the challenges, witnessing the joy and growth of women in our community makes it all worthwhile. Seeing women step out of their comfort zones and embrace new experiences, like camel rides in Morocco or taking their first international flight, has been truly inspiring. It encourages me to continue on!

When you’re not busy, how are you practicing self-care?
Great question!
As a solopreneur, I’m often busy, but I make it a priority to create intentional downtime. This year, I started celebrating a non-negotiable self-care day on the 9th of each month, my birth date. It’s like a mini birthday celebration where I do whatever brings me joy, whether it’s reading a book, binge-watching TV, or trying new spa treatments. This dedicated time helps me recharge and honor myself.
When it comes to women and our women’s community, what would you like to see more of?
I’d love to see more engagement and collaboration. In today’s fast-paced world, building a genuine community can be challenging, especially as we get older.
I believe in the power of networking and joint ventures. There’s so much potential when women come together, share their resources, and support each other.
Let’s embrace more meaningful interactions and build strong, supportive networks.
Before you go, drop a gem or some great advice for our readers out there. Feel free to say whatever compels you. I like to call this section UnpackingHerThoughts. Let them know, Queen!
Absolutely!
There is a nation of people attached to your “go.” What I mean by that is that there are people who need to see you say yes to your dreams and make bold moves.
Sometimes, people don’t know what they don’t know, and seeing you step out and pursue what inspires you can ignite a spark in them.
Your obedience in following your passion can be the catalyst for someone else’s breakthrough.
Starting a business or embarking on any new venture is undoubtedly scary, but it’s necessary.
Without me taking that leap and being pushed into this space, there are women who might never have seen the destinations we’ve explored or experienced the wellness activities we’ve curated. They needed me to move so they could see what was possible for them.
So, be obedient in your doing. Remember that your journey isn’t just about you, it’s about the countless others who are inspired by your courage and action.
Thank you so much, Michelle!
